Monthly Bereavement Lunches

Meets once a month in the WTRC Boardroom (except June and November when we have a memorial service).  This is a time of support and encouragement for our families and staff to catch up, reconnect, and visit while sharing a meal.

Memory Bear Project

Bears are made by HOBC volunteers to help provide comfort and a tangible memory to our families grieving the loss of a loved one.  Fabric from a loved one’s favorite shirt, dress, or blanket is used to make each bear special and unique.

Candlelight Memorial Service

Held the first Thursday in November at Logsdon Chapel on the campus of Hardin-Simmons, family members, staff and volunteers light a candle for loved ones who have passed away during the year.   In the lighting of the candles, the music, the readings, and the special message, we join our families in celebrating and honoring the memory of loved ones.  This event is open to the community.

Butterfly in the Garden Memorial Service

This event is held in May at Festival Gardens at Nelson Park.   A program of music and readings support and encourage our HOBC families as we remember and celebrate loved ones.  This special time ends with each family releasing a live butterfly.  A bbq lunch is also provided.  This event is open to the community.

My Story

Using a series of questions in a chronological format and recording on a digital recorder, “My Story” provides the family with the story of a hospice patient’s life from their own memory and in their own voice. Details available upon request.

Bereavement Counseling

The Bereavement Coordinator provides a limited number of counseling sessions for the families of hospice families. In the event that longer-term counseling is desired, families are referred to community resources.

Life After Loss

The “Life after Loss” support group meets for five consecutive sessions of 1 1/2 hours each. Sessions include validation of common feelings in loss, identification of hindrances to effective grieving, an understanding of grieving processes, dealing with special events and holidays, and suggestions for taking care of oneself after a loss.
