Camp Rehab 2013

In 1953, a young physical therapist by the name of Shelley V. Smith had a vision and convinced a long line of supporters to join him in providing a better quality of life for those seeking help in overcoming the disabling effects of illness or injury.  West Texas Rehab Center opened in Abilene in 1953, expanded into San Angelo in 1977 and opened the Ozona campus in 1998 so services could be delivered to far West Texas.  President/CEO Woody Gilliland, a dedicated board of directors, a highly respected staff of 250 and supporters in the thousands continue this challenging mission into 2013.

The Center’s mission for 60 years has been “to improve the quality of life of those we serve regardless of their financial circumstance.”  The goals of WTRC’s comprehensive treatment services are to eliminate or reduce the disability and retrain the individual to achieve maximum potential.  The Center’s vision continues to be the premier provider of outpatient rehabilitation services.

A favorite time of year at West Texas Rehab Center is summer when we offer camps in Abilene and San Angelo for young patients.  These venues provide our pediatric patients a real opportunity to have fun, enjoy animals, eat S’mores, swim, splash and even fish…a time to just be a kid!  All of the campers are current patients of the Center’s and have diagnosis ranging from mild developmental delays to Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and Down Syndrome….all treated by the wonderful pediatric therapist on staff at WTRC.

In San Angelo, approximately 85 campers and an equal number of buddies converge at the Barney Barnhart family retreat at Lake Nasworthy to revel in several mornings of baseball, crafts, swimming, hayrides, and hot dogs.  For many of these youngsters, this is the first or only camping fun they’ve ever known. Camp Rehab in Abilene has called the Encampment in Buffalo Gap, Texas, home for the last three years.  All 75 campers and volunteer buddies enjoy summer camp fun as it’s meant to be. Campers are about to enjoy traditional camp activities that have been specifically designed and adapted to special needs children, such as: horseback riding, archery, swimming, Taekwondo, and mechanical bull riding.

The seasons come and go, reminding us of our blessings at West Texas Rehabilitation Center..but Summer Time and Camp Rehab is one of our favorites!  Check out pictures of past camps on our Rehab Shutterbug
